German Elections 2021| Who are the major candidates

Who can replace Angela Merkel as Chancellor in German Elections 2021?

Olaf Scholz, centre-left Social Democrats (SPD)

He hails from Osnabrck, northwestern Germany, and entered politics as a socialist youth leader after studying labor law. In the ranks of the SPD, he is seen as a conservative. He and his wife, Berta Ernst, have no children.

It has overseen a 750 billion (£ 647bn $ 904bn) funding package from the federal government to help German businesses and workers survive the epidemic.

“This is the arm that is needed to get the job done,” he said. He is generally seen to be performing well in the epidemic, which has hit German finance and business.

His steadfast, frivolous demeanor gave rise to the nickname “Schulz-o-Met” – but this image of trust sought to perpetuate the Merkel-era stability of the Germans who escaped danger.

What are the possibilities? This is the first German election since 1949 without which no voter is able to benefit from the “Chancellor’s bonus”, as it is called in German. Deputy Chancellor Schulz has stepped into that space. He may be in a rival party, but Olaf Schulz is managing to present himself as a Merkel continuity candidate.

Her passionate, indescribable style and her ability to speak in vague, content-free sentences remind voters of the woman she has worked with for so many years. It does not cause excitement. But according to opinion polls, the central German electorate finds this satisfactory.

The other players of German Elections

Whatever the outcome after September 26, Germany’s next government will be a coalition. This will include the CDU / CSU or Social Democrats, and most likely the Greens, but also three other parties.

Free Democrats (FDP), Free Market Liberals

Whether it’s the SPD or Center Wright, they may need the help of a pro-business FDP for the government.

In 2017, the FDP walked out of coalition talks with the CDU / CSU and the Greens, saying “it is better not to govern than to rule badly”.

The current election puts the FDP at 11%. His candidate for chancellor is Christian Lindner, 42.

He joined the party in 1995 and became a Member of Parliament in 2009. He studied political science at Bonn University and is a reserve officer in the armed forces.

In the epidemic, he has strongly criticized lockdown restrictions, saying they should be targeted more severely with more rigorous testing. He said the crisis management had changed Germany’s image from a “performance superstar” to a “bureaucratic monster”.

Its slogan is to make Germany “more modern, more digital and free.” The FDP wants less taxes and more emphasis on individual initiative.

What are the possibilities? The FDP feels the time has come. Mr. Lindner, a self-confident man, touched his hand four years ago, and was accused of shirking responsibility when he walked out of the coalition talks.

Since then, it has succeeded in re-establishing the FDP’s traditional credentials as a force for modernization, seeking to rein in Germany’s growing bureaucracy. In this way, the party is likely to work with center-left or center-right parties. If Mr Lindner manages to cool off this time around, the party could rediscover its long-standing role as the kingmaker of the coalition.

Far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD)

AFD leaders Jarg Methane (R) and Tino Karpala.
The anti-immigration AFD was first selected for the bond tag in 2017. Riding a wave of voter frustration and anger over the immigration crisis, it became the main opposition party and now has 91 seats.

Since then it has fallen in the election and is now around 10%. Its two main candidates are Alice Weddell and Tino Karpala.

The AFD opposes the European Union and considers Islam a threat to German culture and traditions. Even before the coup, party support was shrinking, as voters’ concerns about immigration eased.

What are the possibilities?

One of the safest predictions in this race is that the ADF will not enter government. His natural rhetoric makes the party toxic to most Germans.

All other parties have refused to ally with the AFD. Since its founding in 2013, the party has split several times, losing more radical and mainstream voters each time. But the supporters they have are loyal, and in some constituencies left behind, the AFD can get the most votes.

Hard-left Die Linke (the Left)

Dialink is once again being talked about as part of a possible alliance. The party was made up of remnants of the old East German Socialist Party and was angry with the left who left the SPD in the middle of the night.

Dylanka is at about 66% in the election, well above the 5% threshold for entering the bond tag. Leading candidates are Janine Wessler and Dietmar Bartsch.

The party is campaigning for higher pensions and lower wages and a system that reduces benefits for the long-term unemployed. It wants to withdraw all German troops from international military missions.

Although Dialink has its share of capitalist fundamentalists, it also leads a state government in Thuringia. Bodo Remillo has been the Prime Minister of the Eastern State since 2014.

What are the possibilities?

Dylanke has no chance of running for chancellor, but the latest polls suggest it could at least numerically enter a left-wing government with the SPD and the Greens.

The party’s anti-NATO stance will be a major obstacle. But as the Greens and the SPD come down from a radical edge, Dialink is increasingly appealing to left-wingers who accuse the other two parties of selling out.
